Whats up with bike helmets

Why do bike helmets sit all loose and teeter-y on the tippy top of kids' heads? what is that? Who falls off of their bike in a perfect 180 degree upside-down arc? Does anyone really know the answer to this? Is it because if they were more like motorcycle/football helmets, there would be obstructed vision?
Casey wears a bike helmet all the time in the house lately, don't ask me why, and I just stare at the thing and it confounds me.

If you figure out how they can work like that, let me know. We did end up buying Josh a helmet that looks more like a motorcycle helmet because they others just didn't make any sense. It looked really funny, though, when he'd wear it backwards. :)

If the bike helmet is loose, then you bought the wrong bike helmet. You need to buy one that fits, snuggly, and if you can't find a perfect fit, they have pads you can stick in them to help them fit more securely. If you go to a bike shop, they can show you how to properly fit a helmet. You should buy a new one every year for growing kids because what fit last year, won't necessarily fit this year. Some bike shops will give you a discount if you turn in the old helmet for growing kids--I know the place by our house gives $10 off for growing kids when you turn in your old helmet.

I have a huge pet peeve when people don't wear bike helmets correctly. They won't do any good if they are loose or unbuckled.yh My biggest pet peeve is parents who make their kids wear bike helmets, but ride behind the kids without a helmet on their own heads. Apparently when the 100-year old driver comes barreling down the street and hits all of you, only your kids need to survive a head injury, eh?

Bike helmets don't last forever, either...if a person is ever in an accident you should replace the helmet...and you shouldn't buy bike helmets used because, like baby car seats, you will never know if someone was in an accident and there could be unseen problems with the helmet.

Helmets are only good for so many years, too...you should check with a bike shop on how often adults should replace their bike helmets.

Finally, kids and adults should NOT wear bike helmets when playing on swings/slides/monkey bars, etc. The strap can be a choking hazard if a child would fall off a playground toy.

Barbnocity...aka, bike police :)

Sorry I wrote a whole post in your comments, but I have huge opinions about bike helmets... :)

For me it usually takes a lot of tweeking of the straps, but I can eventually get them so they don't tip back and forth and become useless. Of course eventually my kids mess with them and I have to do it again, but I do. It takes a lot of moving the strap and trying it on and moving it some more and trying it again. It's annoying but we get there.
